Trip Overview

Upper Dolpo Trek is a challenging and remote trekking route in the western region of Nepal, famous for its rugged terrain, ancient monasteries, and traditional Tibetan culture. The trek takes you from Juphal to Jomsom, offering a unique opportunity to explore the untouched and pristine landscapes of the Dolpo region. Trekkers can customize their journey, combining the Shey Gompa Trek with a visit to Dho Tarap, all within the Juphal to Juphal route.

Upper Dolpo Juphal To Jomsom Trek starts in the small town of Juphal, located in the Dolpa district of Nepal. From here, you will begin your journey through the rugged and barren landscapes of Upper Dolpo. The trail will lead you through stunning mountain scenery, deep valleys, high passes, and remote villages inhabited by the friendly and hospitable people of the region.

One of the highlights of the Upper Dolpo Trek is the opportunity to visit Shey Gompa, a picturesque monastery located at 4,500 meters. This ancient monastery is an important religious site for the locals and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

During the trek, you will also have the chance to visit Phoksundo Lake, a beautiful turquoise lake located at 3,611 meters. This sacred lake is one of the deepest in Nepal and is surrounded by lush forests and snow-capped peaks.

The trek ends in Jomsom, a bustling town in the Mustang district of Nepal. Jomsom is a unique blend of Tibetan and Nepali cultures. From here, you can take a flight back to Kathmandu or continue exploring the Annapurna region.

Equipment list for Upper Dolpo Trek - Juphal To Jomsom

This checklist is designed to help you prepare for a trekking holiday in Nepal, with additional notes for those attempting to summit a trekking peak. It's reassuring to know that high-quality gear, including outdoor clothing and sleeping bags, can be conveniently rented in Kathmandu.

Most treks will be in lodges or teahouses, which offer basic rooms with two single beds and mattresses. These lodges, with their cozy rooms and provided blankets, ensure a comfortable stay, making your trek a more enjoyable experience. A good-quality three-season sleeping bag should suffice. However, for trekking peaks, you'll generally set up base camp with tents, necessitating a warmer sleeping bag, a liner to enhance its warmth, and a sleeping mattress.
